The Single Anastomosis Duodeno-Ileal Bypass with Sleeve Gastrectomy (SADI-S)
SADI-S is an innovative bariatric surgical technique designed to address metabolic disorders and facilitate significant weight loss. As a variation of the Duodenal Switch surgery, SADI-S combines two powerful weight loss approaches: vertical sleeve gastrectomy and a modified gastric bypass technique.
How SADI-S Works
The SADI-S procedure involves two main components:
- Sleeve Gastrectomy: Approximately 80% of the stomach is removed, creating a sleeve-shaped pouch. This significantly reduces the stomach's capacity, leading to decreased food intake and increased feelings of fullness.
- Intestinal Bypass: The first portion of the small intestine (duodenum) is divided just past the outlet of the stomach. The lower part of the small intestine (ileum) is then connected directly to the outlet of the sleeve-shaped stomach, bypassing a significant portion of the small intestine.
This combination of restrictive (reduced stomach size) and malabsorptive (intestinal bypass) elements makes SADI-S highly effective for weight loss and improvement of obesity-related comorbidities, particularly type 2 diabetes.
Benefits of SADI-S
- Significant and sustained weight loss
- Improved resolution of type 2 diabetes and other metabolic disorders
- Reduced operative time and potential complications compared to traditional duodenal switch
- Preserved stomach function for better nutrient absorption
- Lower risk of internal hernias and fewer post-operative complications
As with any surgical procedure, SADI-S requires careful consideration and should be discussed thoroughly with a qualified bariatric surgeon to determine if it's the right option for your individual health needs and goals.
